Sump Pump Repair

When Sump Pump Repair is the Right Fix

Pump that won't turn on
Pump runs constantly without shutting off
Pit fills with water during storms
No battery backup installed
Discharge line frozen or clogged
Pump older than 7 years

Why pumps fail in Kansas City

Three reasons we see again and again. First, the float switch sticks — usually because the pit is too small for the pump and the float can't move freely. Second, the impeller wears out, especially in pits with silt or sediment. Third, the discharge line freezes during a cold snap and the pump burns out trying to push against a blocked pipe. We check all three before we leave, not just whether the motor runs.

Battery backups — not optional in this market

A storm severe enough to fill your sump is also the storm most likely to knock out power. A primary pump without a battery backup is a single point of failure, and Kansas City spring storms are exactly when that failure happens. We install AGM-battery backup systems that run on float-switch logic just like the primary pump, and we test them annually on our maintenance visits.

Sizing and pit prep

An undersized pump cycles too often and burns out. An oversized pump short-cycles and burns out faster. We calculate inflow rate (gallons per minute during a storm) and head pressure (vertical lift to the discharge) before sizing the replacement. If the pit itself is too small or full of sediment, we clean it or install a deeper basin — the pump can only do its job if the pit lets it.

How Sump Pump Repair Works

1

Diagnose the failure

Pump, float, check valve, discharge line — all four checked.

2

Quote repair vs. replacement

Older than 7 years usually replaces; newer often repairs.

3

Install with backup

New primary pump, AGM battery backup if you don't have one.

4

Test full cycle

Fill the pit, watch the pump run, verify discharge clears the foundation.

Sump Pump Repair — Frequently Asked

How long do sump pumps last?

5–10 years for a standard 1/3 HP cast-iron pump. Plastic pumps fail faster. AGM batteries on the backup last about 5 years and should be tested annually.

Do I really need a battery backup?

In a Kansas City basement, yes. The storms that fill your sump are the storms that take out power. A backup is the difference between a dry basement and a $15,000 restoration job.

Can you install a backup on my existing pump?

Yes — most systems are designed to be added on. We install the backup pump in the same pit alongside the primary, on its own float switch and battery.
